"My dear boy, you are under a wrong impression. It is not a race, it is merely a means of getting crews to do long rows"

All the small boats have done it, the schools have done it, the women have done it and finally last Saturday Oxford defeated Cambridge, there is just one Tideway based trophy to be decided, and that is one for considerably faster crews than those broadcast to the world on Saturday afternoon. The Head of the River is this coming Saturday the 2nd April at 4pm. Molesey go off at 1, 12, 13, 23 and 96. Molesey 1 is crammed full of GB internationals taking a week away from Caversham. It has been a delight to see them train at the Club and inspiring to see MBC1 and MBC 2, two outstanding 8's duelling on Saturday morning. I have been lucky enough to accompany both crews on outings in the last week and it is very noticeable that both crews are not only fast but that they are enjoying what they are doing. In a sport dominated by analysis, from rowing machines to the new telemetry systems one area that has yet to be mastered is the relationship between athlete satisfaction and boat speed. It is an area that is often neglected and at great cost, there is occasionally the suggestion that being an elite sportsman is different from doing sport for fun. On the contrary, watching these crews prepare for the Head it is evident that they are having fun. Good luck to all our crews, here's to retaining the Head.
